NEW NEWS…

Archaeologists in the Swiss city of Zurich have unearthed a 5,000-year-old door that may be one of the oldest ever found.  The ancient poplar wood door is “solid and elegant” with well-preserved hinges and a “remarkable” design for holding the boards together, according to chief archaeologist Niels Bleicher.  Using tree rings to determine its age, Bleicher believes the door could have been made in the year 3,063 B.C. – around the time that construction on Britain’s world famous Stonehenge monument began.  ***MARLAR: They believe the door was originally used at the house of Keith Richards.

A Pennsylvania man charged with animal cruelty denies telling his roommates that he planned to eat two badly injured kittens he carried into his apartment.  Francis McGinley says the allegations against him are absurd. The 44-year-old says he rescued the kittens from being hit by a car and took them back to his Chester, Pa., apartment to clean them up and feed them.  McGinley was arrested after police say he told his roommates he had hit the kittens with his truck and planned to eat them.  But McGinley says he doesn’t even drive and stopped to rescue the kittens because he loves animals. ***MARLAR: Besides, he only eats things that taste like chicken – and kittens don’t.

A new iPhone app called the “Ugly Meter” gives cyber bullies a tool to target easy marks. The app scans a snapshot, submits a score and delivers a message — sometimes a harsh one.  An expert says the app walks a fine line between the appropriate and inappropriate.   ***MARLAR: There seems to be an app for almost anything.  In fact, there’s another app called “Are you a Jerk” which searchers your iPhone to see if you’ve ever downloaded the “Ugly Meter” app.

Police say a woman took her 2-year-old girl with her when she broke into a western Michigan home. Police in Muskegon County’s Muskegon Township said they arrested the woman and the woman’s mother after the burglary.  Twenty-six-year-old Nicole Bugajski and 51-year-old Kimberly Mahnke were arraigned on home invasion charges.  Police stopped the women’s vehicle nearby and found Bugajski’s daughter inside. She’s now in protective custody.  ***MARLAR: However, in her defense, it was “Take Your Daughter to Work Day”.

RETRO NEWS: FORMERLY NEW, NOW NOT NEW, BUT STILL ENTERTAINING…

A Texas man celebrated his 22nd anniversary as a UPS driver recently. Shortly after Brent Boyd got behind the wheel, his truck hit the 1 million-mile-mark. Boyd, 51, has driven the same vehicle since he started working for UPS twenty-two years ago. The odometer on Boyd’s GMC truck rolled over to all zeros as he began his delivery route near Palestine. He said his truck’s gone through at least three engines and been repainted several times, but he’s resisted offers for a new van. He says the truck is “like home” and feels like “sitting in the recliner in your house.”  ***MARLAR: Sounds like Brent needs a new recliner too.

Listen up Bigfoot believers — 27-year-old Piotr Kowalski is the latest to join your club. He says he filmed the “monstrous, hairy creature” — known as a Yeti, or “Abominable Snowman”– while walking in Poland’s Tatra Mountains. Piotr was busy taping a wild mountain goat when the giant creature ran into the frame. He said, “I saw this huge ape-like form hiding behind the rocks. When I saw it, it was like being struck by a thunderbolt. I never really believed the local stories of a wild mountain ape-man. But now I do.” The Nautilus Foundation in Warsaw, which probes unexplained phenomena, now has the film and is examining it. President Robert Bernatowicz said, “It shows something that moves on two legs and is bigger than a normal man, but because the camera shakes so much it is difficult to say what it is. We plan to go to the site and see what traces, if any, are left.” (The Sun) ***MARLAR: If you do find the Abominable Snowman, you’ll know he’s the real thing if he offers to make you snow cones.
