Thomas Webber Is the Last American in Damascus and Enjoying It ‘Very Much’

The last American registered as living in the capital of Syria said he has no intention of leaving the war-ravaged country. According to NBC, Thomas Webber was born and raised in Orchard Park, a suburb of Buffalo, New York. But since 1975 the 71-year-old has been living in Damascus where he teaches English at local high school. Most foreigners fled the country during the chaotic early months of the five-year-old conflict. While fighting has raged elsewhere, security in the capital has improved. Webber said he takes precautions, such as checking under his car and keeping a lookout while driving, but he is determined to stay in Syria for the rest of his life.
